Bernard Madoff may not serve anywhere close to the 150 years a Manhattan court sentenced him to in June, as the disgraced financier is reportedly dying of pancreatic cancer.
Bernard Madoff is shown on his way to Manhattan Federal Court on March 12 where he pleaded guilty to one of the biggest Wall Street frauds in U.S. history. A report says the disgraced financier may be dying of cancer. (Louis Lanzano/Associated Press) According to the New York Post, after pleading guilty to swindling more than $65 billion US in the world's largest Ponzi scheme, Madoff has been telling inmates he does not have long to live.
"He's been taking about 20 pills a day for his cancer," the paper on Monday quotes one inmate as saying.
"He talks about it all the time. He's not doing very well."
He has also participated in several native American purification and prayer ceremonies, and is being courted by numerous prison gangs, the report said.
Later on Monday, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons called the Post report "inaccurate," but declined to specify what aspects of the report were erroneous, Reuters reported.
Madoff's lawyer, Ira Sorkin, declined to comment on his client's health, and a spokesperson for the agency said the bureau is seeking Madoff's permission to disclose his medical condition, the report said.
