Auditor in Madoff scandal gravely ill with cancer

NEW YORK

An accountant whose firm is being scrutinized for its work with Bernard Madoff has been financially ruined by the scandal, and is now gravely ill with cancer.

Family and friends described Jerome Horowitz's plight to The Associated Press. The 80-year-old man from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., audited Madoff's books for many years before retiring and handing the account over to his son-in-law in the early 1990s.

Longtime friend Neil Friedman said Horowitz told friends late last summer that he had incurable cancer, and is waiting to go into hospice.

Federal prosecutors haven't accused either Horowitz or his son-in-law of any wrongdoing.

Authorities say Madoff has said his money management business was a $50 billion Ponzi scheme.
