TAX FRAUD SCHEME Fla. man accused of Ponzi scheme on trial in Va.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -
With the government resting, the defense is up next in the Richmond trial of a Miami man accused of stealing $132 million from hundreds of investors.
Edward Hugh Okun is on the list of potential witnesses when his attorneys open their defense Monday in U.S. District Court. The government wrapped up its presentation on Thursday.
During the two weeks of testimony, jurors have heard from former employees, accountants, lawyers and Okun's alleged victims.
Okun is accused of running a Ponzi scheme that bilked 577 investors. An IRS agent testified that from 2005 to 2007, Okun spent more than $30 million on jewelry and boats and a lavish wedding.
