Conflicting views have emerged on whether or not disgraced former financier Bernard Madoff is suffering from terminal cancer.

It was reported by the New York Post yesterday that, according to its sources, Madoff is dying of cancer, although the paper did not confirm what type of cancer he was suffering from.

The paper quotes a fellow inmate: “He's been taking about 20 pills a day for his cancer. He talks about it all the time. He's not doing very well.”

Rumours had been circulating about Madoff’s health prior to his conviction, including that he had pancreatic cancer.

However, according to the New York Times, the US Federal Bureau of Prisons has denied that Madoff is suffering from cancer. The paper quotes from a statement from the US Bureau of Prisons: “"While the NY Post story is full of inaccuracies, and we can't specifically address all of them, we can tell you that Bernie Madoff is not terminally ill, and has not been diagnosed with cancer.”

Madoff is currently incarcerated in a federal prison having been sentenced to 150 years for orchestrating a massive investor fraud scheme.

In March of this year, Madoff (70) pleaded guilty in a New York court to 11 charges, including securities fraud and money laundering, relating to what has been described as the largest fraud in Wall Street history.

The former chairman of the NASDAQ stock exchange ran a 20-year global Ponzi scheme. Its collapse resulted in the loss of over US$65bn from his customers’ accounts, who included politicians, charities and celebrities.

Both Madoff and his wife Ruth were stripped of their personal fortunes of US$170bn and US$80m respectively, and Madoff was handed down a maximum 150-year jail sentence in June.
